Its driven in large part by the past 30 years of preparing kids to go to traditional colleges, and that hasnt been working, Stone said. It is, nationally, something that has sort of taken hold. The shift in thinking has moved from college for all, Stone said, to college and career readiness for all. Charles Garrett, retired New Albany Schools superintendent and senior consultant for CREATE, said he has seen area superintendents become much more supportive of career education in the four years since hes been retired. Schools were very focused on getting students to graduate college, preparing them for college and state testing, Garrett said. Career readiness and awareness was not on most peoples radars in schools. Superintendents like Todd English, of Booneville Schools, are realizing that career readiness starts with exposure. English said many of his students simply arent aware of what their choices are.
